Coláiste na Trocaire were crowned Munster Champions following an impressive victory over kingpins Christ the King Girls’ Secondary School of Cork in Charleville FC last Friday (January 16).
Coláiste na Trocaire, Rathkeale 2-0 Christ King Girls’ SS, Cork
The Limerick side defeated Davis College, Mallow, Presentation Secondary School, Thurles and Coláiste Mhuire, Askeaton on route to the provincial final and faced tough opposition from the former three times winner from Douglas.
Colaiste Na Trocaire started the game strongly and were unlucky on a couple of occasions with the post and Christ the King goalkeeper stopping goal bound efforts. Just before the interval the deadlock was broken as Rathkeale’s Tara Coleman produced a fine effort to slot past the diving Cork shot stopper. The second half continued to be a tight affair and after Christ the King were unfortunate to hit the woodwork, Rathkeale broke forward and scored on the counter attack through Eadaoin Lyons.
The game finished 2-0 and the joint captains of Colaiste Na Trocaire, Kate Geary and Eadaoin Lyons lifted the Munster Cup – a great achievement considering it is only the school’s second year competing in FAI Schools competitions.
Killian Phair’s crew await the winners of the Leinster Final with Presentation College, Kilkenny facing a much fancied Scoil Chríost Rí of Portloaise. The latter took the schools competition by storm last season with two All Ireland appearances, one win, one defeat in the younger age groups (First Year and Minor). Peamount United FC will host this crunch encounter next Tuesday, January 27.
No doubt there will be intense preparations for the Limerick ladies as they line out in the All Ireland Junior Cup semi final on February 12 with their sights set on All Ireland glory.
