On Thursday the 19th of March TY students from Coláiste na Trócaire along with their teachers Ms Giltenane and Ms Moran attended the Seinn Concert in the University of Limerick Concert Hall.
Seinn is a new initiative of the Dioceses of Limerick and Killaloe to promote liturgical music in second-level schools in the two dioceses. The aim of the programme is to provide RE departments with a resource of liturgical music for use at various school celebrations and by extension it teaches and promotes good liturgical music which will be of benefit to parishes.
The programme is directed by Ian Callanan, one of Ireland’s leading composers of liturgical music. There are two main aspects to the programme. The first involves assembling a group of 20 students in the participating schools who learn a repertoire of about 20 pieces of music between the months of November and March. The students do not have to be music students, and the programme is designed so that the music can be taught by a teacher without any formal music training.
The second dimension of the programme involves bringing all the students from the different schools together for a day-long event, which includes music rehearsals, workshops and finally culminating in a celebratory concert with up to 500 students performing, together with an orchestra comprised of professionals and students. The students at Coláiste na Trócaire really enjoyed the experience. Ms Giltenane and Ms Moran would like to thank everyone for all their support.
