A science day took place recently for different year groups in Coláiste na Trócaire. The following is a summary of the main events:
Science Ireland (formerly The True Physics Roadshow) visits both primary and secondary schools providing science shows designed to explain science principles using everyday objects. The shows are performed using all our own equipment which limits the disruption to you and the students. Anthony Caldwell (Ant) and Declan Holmes (Dec) have been presenting interactive science shows for the last ten years to over 40,000 students in 500 schools around the country. Declan Holmes gave the 3 workshops in Colaiste na Trocaire
Three Workshops (emphasis on physics in everyday life and its importance/ promotion of physics)
1. Physics Show (attended by all first year students)
Hands-on science show where students participate in activities and demonstrations. Flight, pressure, density, waves, light, sound and electricity are among the topics covered in this interactive learning experience. This show includes multimedia presentation, experimental demonstrations and group participation.
2. The Nano Show (attended by 5th year physics, chemistry & biology students)
This show will explore the world of Nanotechnology, which allows us to engineer things atom by atom and it will have a major impact on everyone from better drugs to faster computers. Students will be taken on a journey to experience what it is like if we were the size of atoms. Students will discover amazing new materials created from nanotechnology like ferrofluids, smart fabrics and carbon nanotubes.
3. Rocket Workshop (attended by second year students)
This workshop aims to raise interest in science by showing students the advantage of working in a team to design the best rocket possible. The students will work in teams to understand the science behind rockets. They will then design, build and launch water rockets to simulate a realistic rocket launch experience.
